Can AI Build a Real Digital Strategy — Like an Experienced CMO?

Author’s Introduction

In this article, all AI-generated content is highlighted in blue.

Can AI actually build a realistic, decision-ready digital strategy — the kind founders and operators can rely on in a real business?

Not a list of abstract “best practices.” I wanted to see whether AI could generate a complete, coherent growth blueprint — one that connects traffic, unit economics, creative strategy, and retention into a single system that actually makes sense in practice.

That question led me to this experiment.

I asked Gemini to create a full digital growth strategy for a Shopify B2C brand with a $100 AOV, with clear constraints around CAC, LTV, channel roles, and scaling logic.

What surprised me is that the output wasn’t shallow.

Instead of vague advice, the strategy showed structured thinking: clear assumptions, channel responsibilities, retention mechanics, and a logical execution sequence. Not perfect — but far more complete than what AI usually produces when left unguided.

Below, I’m sharing the entire strategy as a long-form article, along with my perspective on what AI did well, where it still falls short, and how founders can use outputs like this without fooling themselves.

2025 Digital Growth Blueprint: Scaling the $100 AOV Brand

As a CMO, our 2025 mandate is efficiency at scale. With a $100 AOV, we have the margin to be aggressive, but the competitive landscape requires a shift from 'media buying' to 'creative-led storytelling.' Our goal is a 3:1 LTV:CAC ratio, driven by a diversified traffic ecosystem and a robust retention flywheel that turns one-time purchasers into brand advocates.

The 2025 Traffic Ecosystem

Meta:

The Creative Testing EngineIn

2025, 80% of Meta's performance is dictated by creative quality, not audience targeting. We are moving away from granular interests toward 'Broad' targeting powered by high-intent creative hooks.

  • The 3-2-2 Method: Test 3 creatives, 2 headlines, and 2 primary texts in a Sandbox campaign every week.
  • Format Dominance: Prioritize 9:16 Reels and 4:5 Feed placements. Use 'masking effects'—obscuring the product feature then revealing it—to stop the scroll.
  • The Hook: Your 'First 3 Seconds' is your most expensive real estate. Test 5 different hooks for every single winning creative body

Google:

The 'Best of Both Worlds' Strategy

Google has shifted how PMax and Standard Shopping interact. We will no longer rely solely on the 'black box' of PMax. Our 2025 approach is a hybrid model for maximum control and reach.

  • Standard Shopping (70% Budget): Used for granular query control and high-intent product placement. This is where we mine search term data.
  • Performance Max (30% Budget): Activated with a higher Target ROAS to act as a discovery and retargeting layer across YouTube, Gmail, and Display.
  • Inventory Health: Use Merchant Center insights to identify 'Zombie Products' (no clicks) and move them into a dedicated 'Catch-all' campaign.

TikTok Shop

TikTok: Social Commerce & Search

TikTok is no longer just a discovery app; it is a marketplace. For a $100 AOV brand, TikTok Shop is our single biggest growth lever for 2025.

  • TikTok Shop Integration: Sync your Shopify catalog directly. 36% of direct social purchases now happen in-app. Leverage 'GMV Max' for automated shop scaling.
  • Spark Ads: Don't just run 'Ads'; boost organic content that is already trending. Use creator-led UGC (User Generated Content) over polished studio shots.
  • TikTok Search: 40% of Gen Z uses TikTok as a search engine. Optimize ad captions and in-video text for SEO keywords to capture intent-based traffic.

CAC Optimization: Protecting Your Margins

Acquisition is getting more expensive. To maintain a healthy bottom line, we must optimize for Blended ROAS and MER (Marketing Efficiency Ratio) rather than platform-specific metrics.

The 2026 LTV Equation

In a high-competition landscape, LTV is your ultimate competitive advantage. It's calculated as:

AOV x Purchase Frequency x Customer Lifespan = LTV

  • AOV ($100): Your baseline. We optimize this via post-purchase upsells and threshold-based free shipping ($120+).
  • Purchase Frequency: The most critical lever. We target a 2nd purchase within 60 days using automated 'Next Best Product' flows.
  • Lifespan: Driven by community, loyalty programs (Smile.io/Yotpo), and consistent value-led content.

And then he asked me about the category of the shop:

Concluding Remarks

All things considered, this approach turned out to be a pretty solid working framework—not a final solution, but a base you can keep improving and expanding upon.

Flexibility is what gives it value.
You may dispute presumptions, set limitations, add business context, give it your own statistics, and even directly include your own ideas. When used in this manner, AI becomes a strategic workplace rather than a generator.

Gemini's capacity to picture concepts is one very noteworthy development. It now displays pertinent images, brief films, supporting articles, and outside references in addition to the plan itself. These are, of course, derived from publicly accessible data, but their arrangement speeds up study and exploration considerably.

Additionally, I purposefully avoided over-engineering the experiment's question. The results might become even more predictable and consistent with a certain school of thought with more explicit instructions, such as particular strategic frameworks, textbooks, or procedures.

This is the actual opportunity.

AI significantly reduces the difficulty of strategic work and clearly benefits those who include it into their regular decision-making. It doesn't take the place of thinking; rather, it enhances it.

And that amplification is important in a competitive environment.

Note: The Gemini Pro edition (a paid membership) was used for this experiment. On free plans, access to multimodal features, richer outputs, and sophisticated reasoning may vary.

AI Prompt Used in This Experiment

To generate the strategy below, I used the following prompt. I’m sharing it for transparency and reproducibility — not as a shortcut, but as part of the experimental setup.

Prompt:
Act as a CMO with 10 years of experience in E-commerce. Create a detailed digital growth strategy for a Shopify B2C brand with an AOV of $100. Focus on traffic ecosystem, CAC optimization, and LTV maximization for 2025. Include specific advice for Meta Ads, Google Shopping, and TikTok.
